EXPERIENCE
Apple, Glasgow
DWD are instructed by Apple to manage their business rates affairs. This includes properties in Scotland, such as their shop on Buchanan Street, Glasgow.
Apple carried out extensive works to increase the size of their shop from 417 sq m to 1,300 sq m. This required us to submit an appeal to merge the rating assessments and identify the potential for savings.
Empty rate relief was negotiated with Glasgow City Council. By establishing that one of the buildings assessed is listed we obtained 100% relief for 7 months. We also felt that the Zone A rate at £3,900/sq m was significantly higher than it should have been. We discussed the level of value with the Assessors during the merger negotiations and agreed the new larger assessment at a lower rateable value than the previous assessment. This was achieved by reaching agreement for a revised Zone A rate of £1,650/sq m, a near 60% reduction.
DWD continues to provide advice for Apple in respect of 2010 and 2017 List business rates matters.
