EXPERIENCE
Battery Storage Facilities, Eggborough, North Yorkshire
In 2017 DWD advised on a battery storage facility with an output of up to 50 megawatts, to be charged from the electricity grid during periods of low demand for electricity and then supply electricity almost instantaneously to the grid during periods of high or unexpected demand. The project would be located at the then existing coal-fired power station. DWD successfully demonstrated to the satisfaction of the local planning authority that the battery storage facility could be constructed using the permitted development rights available to EPL as an electricity undertaker. DWD subsequently secured a Certificate of Lawful Development for the facility.
In 2022 DWD led the preparation and submission of a planning application for a 500 megawatt standalone Battery Energy Storage System on the former Air Liquide site at the former coal-fired power station. Working closely with AECOM’s environmental consultants, a comprehensive planning application was compiled, and the need for formal Environmental Impact Assessment was screened out. Through working effectively with Selby District Council, planning permission was granted under delegated authority in target timescales, in time for prequalification for the 2023 National Grid T-4 Capacity Auction. The project represents one of the largest BESS projects to be awarded a capacity market contract.
